Pollution of mountain lakes

A wilderness, an isolated spot, a limpid and magnificent stretch of water, a corner of paradise... But all this is deceptive. Beneath this apparent beauty lies very real, dangerous, persistent and invisible pollution.

When you arrive near a mountain lake and discover this wild, natural expanse, who would suspect that its waters harbour disastrous chemical pollution... And yet this is exactly what two scientists from Toulouse have discovered and analysed in several mountain lakes in Ariège and Haute-Garonne.

No fewer than 141 toxic molecules have been discovered, originating from various sources of pollution and attributed to man. A cocktail of pesticides, agricultural pesticides and insecticides.

While the effect on the wildlife of the lakes and their surroundings is already visible, including the total disappearance of plankton, it is impossible to predict what the effects will be on humans and their health, even if it is undeniable that this cocktail is necessarily harmful to us. Gone are the days of innocent bathing in these exceptional places, and above all, impossible from now on to drink this fresh water, unless you filter it first with an effective filtration system, such as a Berkey® filter or a transportable system such as the Berkey® flask.
